Underfloor cooling system: comfort, efficiency and innovation

UNDERFLOOR COOLING SYSTEM

An underfloor cooling system is a technologically advanced system for cooling residential buildings in summer. It works through a network of pipes embedded in the floor that circulate cold water at a low temperature. This solution is one of the most modern alternatives to traditional air conditioning systems, as it combines efficiency, living comfort and energy sustainability.

The radiant floor system allows rooms to be cooled evenly, without forced air movement, reducing energy consumption and ensuring high indoor air quality.

Principles of radiant cooling

The basic principle of radiant floor cooling is based on thermal radiation: chilled water flowing through circuits under the floor absorbs heat from the environment, lowering the internal temperature of the living spaces. Unlike convection systems, this system does not generate air flows or dust movement, helping to create a healthier and more comfortable indoor climate.

As the system operates at temperatures between 15°C and 18°C, it is highly compatible with modern low-temperature heat generation systems, such as heat pumps. This synergy makes radiant cooling ideal for latest-generation homes designed for high energy efficiency.

Key components of the system

Pipes play a central role: our ranges of pipes for underfloor systems - Mixal and Thermoline - are designed to guarantee oxygen impermeability, high thermal conductivity, flexibility and durability. The Mixal multilayer pipe, thanks to its aluminium core, guarantees dimensional stability, low thermal expansion and better heat exchange.

The V-ERRE insulating panel reduces heat loss downwards and facilitates the installation of coils. Made of EPS expanded polystyrene, it is also available with a percentage of recycled material, making it not only the most efficient solution for installers but also the most modern and sustainable solution.

Advantages of an underfloor cooling system

The system ensures uniform temperature distribution, improving perceived comfort, and the same system can be used for winter heating and summer cooling. The heat transfer fluid varies in temperature depending on the season, maintaining efficiency and reducing operating and maintenance costs.

By not raising dust, the system improves air quality and reduces the risk of allergies. It does not generate condensation or mould. Thermal stratification is optimal.

Valsir radiant systems for heating and cooling

The V-ERRE and V-ERRE0 systems are ideal for new buildings or renovations thanks to their low thermal inertia. The insulating panels are UNI EN ISO 13163 certified and CAM compliant, ensuring high performance and environmental friendliness.

The screed incorporates the pipes and acts as a heat exchanger. Depending on its thickness, it can be defined as high or low inertia. A well-designed stratigraphy includes all the components necessary to adapt to any finishing surface such as parquet, linoleum or stoneware.

Unlike air conditioning, underfloor cooling ensures greater comfort thanks to its uniform temperature and absence of air movement. It also allows for significant energy savings when combined with a heat pump and a photovoltaic system.

Architectural compatibility and design freedom

With no visible elements, the radiant system allows total freedom of furnishing and design. It is perfect for prestigious environments, historic or modern buildings, and is completely silent.

Combined with heat pumps, it improves the COP (Coefficient of Performance) and reduces consumption for the end user. Combined with solar and photovoltaic panels, it creates an even greener system.

A factor to consider: humidity

To ensure that the underfloor cooling system can express its full potential efficiently and safely, careful control of air humidity is also essential. This is because the floor, when exposed to excessive humidity, can lead to the formation of surface condensation.

In this regard, combining the system with a Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (HRV) system is strategic: in addition to ensuring constant and healthy air exchange, HRV maintains relative humidity within optimal values. The integration of radiant cooling and HRV therefore increases the efficiency of the entire system and improves indoor air quality, with an additional performance advantage.

Long-term economic benefits

The system reduces energy and maintenance costs over time. The pipes and all the main components have a lifespan of over 50 years, making the initial investment sustainable and long-lasting.

The choice of a floor cooling system depends on: the type of building, the local climate and the available stratigraphy. Low-inertia systems are ideal for environments with frequent temperature changes, while high-inertia systems are ideal for stable environments.

Underfloor radiant heating is now one of the most advanced and green solutions for modern homes. It offers comfort, efficiency and versatility, enhancing the value of the property over time thanks to its integration with renewable energy sources.
