Blackfire, the fire-resistant waste system

SELF-EXTINGUISHING PIPING

Blackfire is a push-fit waste and drainage system including over 270 pipes, fittings and accessories, designed to ensure exceptional fire resistance in compliance with standard DIN 4102 on the behaviour of materials and construction elements in the event of fire.

In addition to its self-extinguishing properties, which put it in a B1 class according to DIN 4102, Blackfire also stands out for its acoustic comfort, having noise levels of 16 dB(A) at a flow rate of 4 l/s.

Another feature is Blackfire’s resistance to sun exposure, which allows it to be installed outdoors and to meet the need to stock elements outside without risking damage or discolouration.

How is Blackfire made?

The system is composed of three layers of material: the outer layer is in black polypropylene and guarantees resistance to abrasion and UV rays; the middle layer is produced using a mix of polypropylene and mineral fillers to give the pipes excellent mechanical resistance to stress and impacts at low temperatures (down to -10°); for the inner layer, which is very smooth and resistant to chemicals dissolved in drains, white polypropylene is used to facilitate video inspection operations.

Designed for waste systems, ventilation systems and rainwater drainage systems in civil and industrial buildings, hospitals, hotels, etc., Blackfire offers a wide choice of accessories to create entire networks (including connections to sanitary fixtures, waste stacks and the waste manifold), and to meet any design requirement.

If needed, it can be connected using special fittings to elements in different materials, such as cast iron, PE, PVC and PP.

VBF Ventilation Branch Fitting

Like other Valsir waste systems, the Blackfire range offers the Ventilation Branch Fitting. It is an extremely efficient solution for the ventilation of the waste stack and branches, and has great advantages in terms of both design and savings.

The main goal of this technology is to allow the inlet of horizontal branches from sanitary fixtures at the point where they flow into the waste stack.

Blackfire

To achieve this purpose, the VBF makes use of a geometry featuring six inlets: three main inlets for the connection of traditional sanitary fixtures (including the WC), and three inlets suited for devices with a lower flow rate.

Installing the VBF Ventilation Branch Fitting means that there is an offset of the waste stack for each floor of the building. This factor helps to slow the flow rate (and therefore the pressure generated inside the system) and allows the inlet of waste water of the horizontal branch to be separated from the main flow of the stack. As a result, the horizontal flow has already started when it meets the other flows, greatly improving system’s performance: the most immediate consequence – and the most important – of this solution is that a ventilation stack is no longer needed for operation of the system, which will be designed as a single waste stack.

With the mixing rod, it is no longer necessary to construct a ventilation column for the proper functioning of the drainage system. Installation is quicker, the system takes up less space and construction costs are considerably lower! And the system can handle much higher flow rates!

The first benefits are the space gained (which can be used to house other systems) and the cost savings: the materials used for a ventilation branch are much thinner than a traditional system, but in any case it can handle higher flow rates with much lower pressures, which also puts less stress on the traps. It is easy to grasp, then, that the VBF delivers the most advantages when installed in tall buildings where many fixtures are used at the same time, such as in hospitals.

The advantage of adopting this solution in a system like Blackfire – apart from being strategic from a design standpoint – is very tangible: compared to any system involving welding, using the VBF in a push-fit system makes installation much faster and easier.
