BIRDIE
THE FLOATING SYSTEM FOR THE PROTECTION OF RESERVOIRS AND IMPLEMENTS
DOCUMENTS AND RESOURCES
Birdie | L02-1010/0 |
Birdie is a system designed to protect irrigation reservoirs or drinking water reservoirs, reservoirs and sewage storage tanks, preventing them from emptying due to evaporation and deterioration caused by organic agents such as algae, bacteria and pests (which also cause unpleasant odours and putrefaction gases).
Installing the floating modules couldn't be easier: it's quick, economical and requires no special equipment or machinery. Simply throw the Birdie modules into the reservoir: thanks to their shape, they will spread out on their own across the water surface, covering up to 99% of it.
Birdie is fully recyclable at the end of its life, in accordance with the principles of environmental sustainability and Green Procurement.
How is Birdie made?
The Birdie system is blow-moulded, with a structure consisting of three layers of recycled, UV-stabilised HDPE, and is designed for continuous use for up to 25 years.

1 - The module consists of a hexagonal flotation chamber and is simply unsinkable. |
2 - The central body, partially filled with water, ensures stability and wind resistance (up to 150 km/h). |
3 - The special connection between the hexagonal buoyancy chamber and the central sphere ensures constant drainage of rainwater inside the basin. |
STRENGTHS
OF THE BIRDIE SYSTEM

WATER ACCESS
The basin remains fully accessible even after the modules have been installed: there is no need to remove them.

QUICK INSTALLATION
No special equipment is required; it can be installed with the basin empty or full (and left in place).

VERSATILITY
It is suitable for tanks equipped with mixers, agitators and air blowers, and adapts to any level variation.

FLEXIBILITY
The modules can be installed, removed, and moved from one basin to another easily and at any time.

LIGHTNESS
Birdie modules are hollow and extremely light, yet extremely stable once installed.

UV RESISTANCE
The floating elements are made of triple-layer HDPE and treated with additives for maximum UV resistance.

REDUCED EVAPORATION
The Birdie module cover acts as a barrier to sunlight and reduces evaporation by 95%.

MECHANICAL RESISTANCE
The system is not affected by or damaged by any type of weather phenomenon (even extreme).

NO ALGAE
Algae are dangerous for both water safety and lifting devices. With Birdie, they are reduced by 99%!

COST REDUCTION
Installation costs are extremely low and virtually no maintenance is required over time.

LONGEVITY
The modules have a life expectancy of over 25 years, even when exposed to sunlight and atmospheric agents.

PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEMS
Birdie protects floating photovoltaic panels from damage caused by birds and insects.

IDEAL FOR AGRICULTURE AND LIVESTOCK FARMING
Birdie is naturally suited to use in the agricultural and livestock sectors. Used to cover irrigation tanks, waste water tanks and rainwater collection tanks, slurry storage basins and biodigesters, it acts as a barrier, limiting evaporation and reducing waste and costs. In livestock farming, Birdie also helps to contain unpleasant odours and harmful emissions such as ammonia and methane.
Installation is immediate, the system requires no maintenance and guarantees full compliance with current environmental regulations.

PROTECTS INFRASTRUCTURE
Birdie is also the ideal solution for municipal applications. Used in drinking water basins, flood control reservoirs, storage tanks for snow-making systems and for irrigating sports fields (e.g. golf courses), it helps to reduce evaporation, algae growth and the accumulation of contaminants.
Its effectiveness also extends to strategic contexts such as airport infrastructure, where the presence of birds can pose a safety risk: by covering the entire surface of the water, Birdie prevents birds from gathering, drastically reducing the possibility of bird strikes!

WATER TREATMENT
The system is also extremely effective in the treatment and purification of waste water, in sedimentation tanks, oxidation tanks and anaerobic digesters. In addition to limiting evaporation and preventing the formation of surface films and the spread of odours, Birdie helps to maintain the chemical and physical stability of the liquids contained in the tanks, preserving fundamental parameters such as temperature and dissolved oxygen levels.
It also reduces the risk of contamination by foreign materials — such as dust, organic residues or volatile agents — which could compromise water quality and encourage the proliferation of microfauna that could be harmful to the biological safety of the plant.

BIRDIE IN THE MINING SECTOR
In the mining and fossil fuel energy industries, Birdie is ideal for highly critical environments such as the treatment tanks used in the mineral extraction industry, as well as in basins for managing wastewater generated by fracking operations for oil and natural gas extraction.
The system reduces evaporation and the dispersion of volatile compounds, improving the containment of potentially polluting substances. It also prevents the entry of atmospheric agents and external materials that could alter the chemical composition of the water, with negative effects on production processes.
SUSTAINABILITY
The system components are made entirely
from post-consumer recycled plastic, which can be recovered at the end of its life.

A BARRIER FOR HARMFUL AGENTS
Birdie not only reduces the environmental impact of industrial activities, it also reduces atmospheric emissions of gases such as ammonia, methane and hydrogen sulphide. Furthermore, it plays a key role in reducing the spread of contaminants: in storage tanks, more than 150 pathogens can be present as a result of the decomposition of organic substances; the modules also act as a shield against wind and atmospheric agents that could spread them. Birdie also reduces the formation of bromates (highly carcinogenic).
The adoption of covering systems for new or existing facilities intended for the collection of agricultural sewage or liquid fermentation products is also required by law: Birdie is also the solution for complying with the legal requirements that will come into force in 2030.

KEEP PESTS AWAY
Birdie is also extremely effective in preventing harmful species from settling in water basins. For example, , birds, which can transmit pathogens to the water through their droppings; and which, when present in large numbers, can cause damage to neighbouring crops and even to nearby infrastructure, such as airports (think, for example, of the problems for air traffic caused by flocks of birds, also known as “bird strikes”).
Of course, the same advantage is achieved with regard to numerous harmful species of insects, such as mosquitoes, which lay their eggs in stagnant water and are a dangerous vector for the transmission of diseases and viruses.
