The importance of air filtration and HRV systems

The reference practice UNI/PdR 161:2024

In July 2024, UNI/PdR 161:2024 was published, a reference practice that provides guidelines for improving indoor air quality and reducing biological risks through the use of filtration systems in HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) devices. The practice emphasises the importance of efficient filtration to minimise the presence of bioaerosols and other pollutants in indoor environments.

How filtration works in HRV systems

HRV systems are designed to ensure continuous air exchange, maintaining a healthy and comfortable environment. Filtration takes place through high-efficiency filters that capture particles of different sizes, from fine dust to pollen. For example, ISO ePM1 classification filters are able to stop at least 55% of PM1 particles, preventing pollutants and allergens from entering the indoor environment.
